Retirement Day #1892
Don't get me wrong, I dearly love harvest time - but it is September 4, and at this point, I’ve got 1, 2, 3, 4…ahhhhh [actual number: 52] quarts of tomato sauce - enough to feed the Bulgarian army for the winter - I’m screaming to the plants under my breath “I love you, but could you chill out a bit now?” – especially the matt’s wild cherry tomatoes- they have become an invasive species - we didn't even plant any this year – nonetheless the matt’s occupy 4 “stations”- they’re massive- 10-12 ft high - it's the invasive volunteer army of matt’s tomatoes - being cherry tomatoes, they are labor intensive to process- they produce like crazy, and will continue to produce - we will have fresh matt’s tomatoes for Thanksgiving - I’m speaking from experience - this is an incredible miracle for which I‘m deeply grateful - it is amazing – to have summer tomatoes attending the feast of Thanksgiving – but right now I’m like mmmm ready to ahhhhh matt’s- WARNING! do NOT let matt’s invasive army of tomatoes volunteer into your yard- they will take over, produce, and then, if you have this, like I do, thing in your DNA, you feel that you have to harvest and process these wonderful little too many tasty tomatoes – you have a need to do right by the little guys - do right by this gracious gift of God – which means you will spend HOURS every day making sauce - until, like me- you have 50+ qts and are looking for unlocked cars and oh yes - Christmas gifts - I apologize to you all now - hell, I’m already giving them away- it’s an embarrassment of riches- it’s the Harvest- gotta love it, gotta go a little crazy - there they are- tomatoes- loads of grapes too- attempting wine, even though I don’t even really drink wine anymore, I’m attempting it- because – you know- GRAPES! I’m researching ancient French recipes for grape sauce- French renaissance recipes with tarragon and goose stuff [MERDE!] which should be kind of tasty-in a gnarly way?- good golly great grapes…. And squash strong and steady, peppers out of control, beans twerking in the wind, and I’m getting low on freezer space- just sent the hubby out for more jars….
Can’t let the bounty of the summer slip by untended- summer is gone too soon, and her flavor is captured, lingering in these OMG SOOOO nummy delicious foods- so, I’ll figure out something to do with all this divinity - because - crazy or no- a good harvest radiates a warm summer sun for heart, tummy and soul when it’s 20degrees below.
And Winter is Coming…..
