A few weeks back I received an unexpected call from an alum who currently lives and works in Cincinnati, OH. She and her collaborator had submitted an original work for consideration in the 2025 Cincinnati Fringe Festival; it was accepted, and they were in the process of putting together the cast. Their idea was to present a series of dance works linked together as a ‘live podcast’ and they needed someone who could be both a podcast host and an embodied storyteller [apparently, they wanted some senior representation, too] - would I be interested? No pay, but they would try to cover expenses.
I haven’t performed in 20yrs.
I experienced a mix of flattery, fear and challenge – sautéed with organizational concerns like availability and transportation. Following negotiations with myself and my husband as to whether I was able, interested, or just plain insane to take on such a task, and after checking most of the pragmatic boxes, I realized I could do this IF I wanted to. Big shout out to my supportive cheerleader husband ;-).
What the hell - yes.
The rush of terror, excitement and puke that bubbled up was disconcerting, but undaunted, I spent last week rehearsing in Columbus, OH. Next week, following more rehearsals in Cincinnati, we have a week off, then tech on June 6th and opening for a 5-show run June 7 – June 12, 2025. Bought fresh mascara and eyeliner just for the occasion.
“My name is Jacqueline Dove; welcome to this week’s episode of “Like Moths to the Flame” – the podcast that seeks to illuminate …….”
